Difference between IS 15477 & EN 12004 Standards

IS 15477 : 2019 :- This standard prescribes the requirements for adhesives used for fixing tiles of different porosity and classifies the tile adhesive into different types suitable for their proposed application.

Classification of IS 15477 : 2019
The adhesive shall be classified into 5 types and the recommended application of these types of adhesive are given below :-
  • Type 1
  • Type 2
  • Type 3
  • Type 4
  • Type 5

Type 1: General purpose adhesive

  • Porosity
    > 3 %
  • Tiles – clay and ceramic (non-vitrified)
    tiles (Size: < 300 mm x 300 mm)
  • Background – Cement based backgrounds
(substrates) like cement plaster, cement concrete, cement screed,
  • Recommended – Interior dry area applications
    only

Type 2:
Polymer modified adhesive

  • Porosity
    – < 3%
  • Tiles –
vitrified/fully vitrified tiles, glass mosaic tiles, all stones, dense and
large dimension (size > 300 mm x 300 mm size) tiles and stones (slabs),
  • Background
    –  Wet areas, submerged areas, etc.
  • Recommended  – Interior floor and wall applications, and
    for exterior floor applications.

Type 3:
Polymer modified adhesive

  • Tiles –
Ceramic, clay tiles, basalt tiles, vitrified, glass mosaic tiles and porcelain
tiles and all natural stone tiles.
  • Background/area
    – Exterior wall substrates like plaster or concrete

Type 4:
Polymer modified adhesive

  • Tiles –
Tiles included in Type 1, 2 and 3 but intended for installation on dry wall
board substrates. Suitable for all types of tiles and stones except metal tiles
or engineered stones to be installed on dry wall board substrates.
  • Note:
    Tiles/stones: > 600 mm x 600 mm – Should comply with ‘S1’ category .
  • Tiles/stones: > 1200 mm x 1200 mm
    – Should comply with ‘S2’ category.

Type 5:

Mixture of synthetic resin, mineral filler & organic additives. Eg : PU,
Epoxy adhesives & the like.

  • Tiles –
All types of tiles including engineered stones (manufactured stones), metal
    tiles, glass tiles,
  • Background/area
    – Glass or metallic substrates , Different cement based substrates, drywall
boards, metals composite boards, modified backer boards and the metallic
    substrates.
